Purging vs Breakouts

Purging vs Breakouts

Breakouts, acne, pimples and blackheads are often spoken about under the same thing. However, there is a difference between a breakout and your skin purging. Each of these has different causes and symptoms. Each of these can be treated.

What is the difference between your skin purging versus breaking out?
Purging is when the skin starts to speed up cell regeneration, pushing toxins and dead skin cells to the surface, causing clogged pores and congestion. This looks more like a cluster of whiteheads and blackheads.

Breakouts are caused by hormones, excess oil production, pore-clogging ingredients and lack of exfoliation. This appears like a mixture of pimples, cysts, blackheads and whiteheads.

How long do these last?
Purging can occur for a period of time after a facial or switching to natural products as your skin releases a build of toxins and begins to adapt to active ingredients.

Breakouts tend to be longer lived. This is a deeper-seated cause that needs to be addressed to enable the skin to heal—assessing hormones, skin type and correct skincare routine. Don't disappear; there is a solution, and it won't last forever.

What skincare routine should you follow?
During a purge or breakouts, you'll want to follow a similar skincare routine. This is because you'll want to ensure the products you are using are gentle, nourishing, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial.

🌙 Cleanse
Cleanse morning and night with an oil or cream-based cleanser and warm water. If your skin feels squeakily clean after cleansing, you've stripped the skin of natural oils, which creates excess oil production adds the hydration you've stripped away.

🌙 Tone
Apply an antibacterial misting toner morning and night after cleansing. Reapply throughout the day when you feel dry or oily. Try not to touch or pick at pimples or whiteheads.

🌙 Exfoliate
Gently exfoliate one-two times a week. We love using a dry face brush. Dry brushing gets rid of skin flakes and dead skin cells that could otherwise cause clogged pores.

🌙 Oil Serum
Good natural face oil helps balance your skin's PH levels and rebalance the skins natural oil production. Good quality face oils work down to the base of the epidermis, allowing them to be rapidly absorbed.

Incorporate an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial skincare product into your routine to reduce redness and the creation of pimples. Our Clear Complexion bundle is jam-packed with nourishing and healing ingredients to help combat pimples, breakouts, whiteheads and blackheads.

If your breakouts persist, see a trusted skin professional or doctor to see if there's an underlying cause.
